Personal project a go-go

So from the whole wide world of ideas for a personal project I went for a nice geographical angle. The idea to make a series of personal postcards of places and streets using illustrative typography. I stumbled across the work of Alison Carmichael last year and she's just amazing and you should really have a look at her website.

So after many trials of writing and drawing and figuring ou just how I wanted to do this (ideas involved everything from die cutting to pegs on string) I went for the very old school chalk on a blackboard. I know photography isn't strictly to be used in the illustration module but I thought it would be a nice touch to photograph the blackboard in the environment.

Clarinda's

So I was hired a couple of months ago by a friend of a friend to redesign the menus for a small tea shop at the bottom of the royal mile. 'Clarinda's' is a lovely wee shop and they do the best hot chocolate in town, you should go. Their menus were outdated and not very attractive.

I was asked to design menus that stayed close to the themes and style of the shop but that also looked really fresh and new. The only must was the profile of Clarinda, Robert Burns' famous mistress.

They eventually chose this design which is obviously the one I liked least. I really got the feel of the client-designer relationship with this project. I like being thrown in the deep end :)

Cat book illustrations

The brief was set to write, illustrate and bind a children's book based around the story of a cat who can't make friends easily to help teach young children how to go about making and keeping friends. Below are some of the illustrations I created
